Springfield remanufacturing sector teams up with local college to recruit workers

 One of the fastest-growing fields in Springfield is short on workers. Leaders in the remanufacturing sector are now getting creative when it comes to recruiting and training new employees.

"We have customers knocking on our door wanting us to develop new reman programs, and that's going to take people, quality people with skills to come in and help us meet those demands," said Krisi Schell of SRC Holdings.

SRC is now teaming up with Ozarks Technical Community College to offer a new kind of training: an emphasis in remanufacturing for those in diesel, automotive, or manufacturing tracks at the school's tech center.

"It's been a challenge and continues to be a challenge to find talent and fill our workforce needs," Schell said.

There are eight remanufacturing facilities in Springfield alone, totaling some 2500 jobs.

"It's rewarding, and I get to see the rewards," said Darren Gifford.

Gifford was one of the first SRC employees when the company started some 35 years ago. As an employee-owner he bought stock for 10 cents a share. That same stock is now worth near $80 a share.

"A lot of pride. We build it like we're building it for ourselves. When I build an engine, or we finish a turbo charger, whatever we're putting together, you build it like it's your own," Gifford said.

That sense of pride is just one of many benefits available to the next generation of reman workers.

"We have jobs. We need people," Schell said.

OTC worked directly with local businesses to come up with that new series of courses.
